Medical Emergency Alert

One of the major concerns all people have when dealing with elderly or disabled loved one’s is getting medical assistance to them when they need it. Often we are not present when an emergency occurs. Who then will call for help? Getting them medical support on time may mean the difference between life and death. As with many medical emergencies, the first couple minutes are the most important. A Medical Alert System (MAS) or Personal Emergency Response System (PERS) allows your loved one to call for immediate help as soon as he or she is in need of medical assistance.

A medical emergency alert system is a three-part system that alerts an emergency response team to a medical emergency. The system is made up of a transmitter, a control panel, and Emergency Response Center.

The transmitter comes in various shapes. Some are made to imitate watches. Others are designed like keyfobs (similar to those used on cars) to be carried on a key chain or in a pocket or clipped onto a belt. Some of the keyfob designs are worn around the neck. The transmitter is a portable component that is carried on the person of the user. It has ergonomic buttons that allow for easy access and use in case of an emergency. When the button on the transmitter is pressed, it will send a signal to the control panel.

The control panel is installed on the wall and plugged in to an AC outlet and a phone jack. When the control panel receives transmission from the transmitter signaling an emergency, the panel calls the Emergency Response Center, which is a 24/7 service that monitors medical alert systems.

When the Emergency Response Center receives a call from a control panel, the center will call back to the house using the speaker on the control panel to attempt to gain contact with the person who called in. The speakers are extremely loud and have highly sensitive microphones attached to it that often will allow the patient to speak with the Response Center from almost any location in the house. The Center will notify an ambulance or hospital to respond to the emergency based on the answers given by the patient. However, if the Center receives no response at all, it will automatically dispatch an ambulance to the home.

One extremely important feature for any control panel is line seizure. With this ability, if there is an emergency and the phone line is busy, the emergency alert system will automatically seize the line and transmit the call. Without it, the system is not able to do anything. Special jacks can be installed to ensure line seizure in case of an emergency.

MAS or PERS enables your elderly loved one the ability to make an emergency call when he or she is unable to get to a phone. It gives you the peace of mind in knowing that even when your loved one’s alone, there is always someone there.
